Happy Thanksgiving!

I know not everyone who reads this celebrates Thanksgiving, but if you do, I hope you have a great one! Don’t eat too much turkey!

And since this is also Thankful Thursday, what a great way to celebrate the day than a thankful list –

  • I’m thankful Duck, Doodle and I were able to visit my friend Heather last weekend and her church. We even got to see “The Star.”
  • I’m thankful we bought the motorcycle (well, still paying for it, but you know what I mean). Duck’s ridden to work several beautiful days and other than the gate crashing incident, has been totally safe and having a blast riding. I’ve told him I’d hold off ’til spring before I learn to ride, but honestly I don’t know if I can wait that long.
  • I am thankful for instant stuff. Stuff like instant gravy — just add water; Stove Top stuffing — just add water and some butter (I think); Hamburger Helper — just add water, milk and hamburger. If it weren’t for this stuff, I could really not cook the few odd times I decide to try :)
  • I am most thankful for Duck. I am very blessed to have him in my life. Not everyone has someone, and not everyone who has someone has someone like Duck.
  • I am most thankful for Doodle as well. Even though there are times where she annoys me (on purpose mind you), there are other precious times where she wants to sit on my lap and watch the original Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
  • I am thankful for this house and all that clutters it. I have never needed for anything. Sure there are things I want to change — like the hideous wallpaper in the kitchen that’s been there for the 11 years we’ve lived here — but it’s been a great roof over my head, keeps me warm in winter, protects my family and allows each of us to go to separate rooms when we want “alone time.” It’s much bigger and better than any single-wide trailer I dreamed about when I was very little.
  • I am the most thankful for God though and Him sending Jesus down here to save us from ourselves. Boy, did I ever need saving from myself! I’m also thankful for the ladies who are joining me in the study groups. I’m praying that God will use me — use my site — to reach others with questions about my God and my Jesus.

I hope you and everyone in your family are safe and well through this holiday weekend (if you’re in the US). Well, I hope you and your family are safe and well no matter where you’re at :D

Thankful Thursday

Last night Duck asked me why I share embarrassing stories with the world, and none of the good stuff. So I decided to make my Thankful Thursday post all things I’m thankful for about him.

  • I am thankful that he simply goes to the laundry room to look for clean clothes instead of yelling at me.
  • I am thankful that he still loves me after 11 years of marriage.
  • I am thankful he has a calm spirit and can deal with the troublemakers in our lives (namely me and Doodle!)
  • I am thankful doesn’t get mad if I shrink one of his favorite tshirts.
  • I am thankful that he’ll rub my feet on those rare days where I’ve been on my feet all day.
  • I am thankful he still thinks I’m God’s Perfect Gift to him, because you know, God’s never wrong.
  • I’m thankful he encourages me even when I fall down going in circles.
  • I am thankful he wants to go to work every day to provide for me and Doodle.
  • I’m thankful that he takes care of working on homework with Doodle. She’d drive me crazy if it were all me!
  • I’m very thankful he didn’t marry me for my cooking, cleaning or sewing skills (or lack of).
  • Most of all I’m thankful that he is a Godly man who gives me space and time when he drags me out of bed on a Sunday morning for an early morning service :D

There are many more great things about Duck, but I didn’t take my nap today and I can’t think very straight!

Thankful Thursday

Rio Boyd

I came here with the intention of writing a post about our dog Rio — he died Sunday night. Then I realized it was Thankful Thursday and that I haven’t participated in quite awhile. So I decided to be thankful for Rio.

  • I’m thankful Rio was with my husband during some very troubling times before he and I met. He got Rio when Rio was 6 weeks old. When Duck and I started dating, Rio had just turned 1 year old.
  • Rio taught me not to leave my dirty clothes laying around. He bought me several pairs of panties for many Christmases.
  • Rio also taught me that Valentine’s Day really does suck. My first V-day with Duck: I thought I’d surprise Duck at work by bringing Rio to see him at his office. Only thing is, I got lost on the college campus. Rio and I walked around and around and all the buildings looked the same. I took Rio back to the house. He knew something wasn’t right. Here he’d gone for a ride and all I’d talked about was Duck. I opened my door as Rio came and stood on my lap. I foolishly thought he was going to jump down. Nope. He gave me a V-day kiss — well, a kiss with teeth. His head was in front of my face and yeah, he bit my lip. I couldn’t even get a kiss from Duck for a few days.
  • I learned from Rio that dogs really can be as hard-headed as their owners. Rio never backed down from anything. He bit my hands several times when I wasn’t looking. I’d reach down to pick up a ball or toy he was playing with to throw for him, but he didn’t want me to have it. We developed an understanding after the fifth or sixth time. Yes, it took me that long to give up and let Rio have his way. I can be hard-headed too ya know.
  • I’ve been at home for the last 7 years or so and we’d developed a system. Whenever he wanted to go outside to pee, he’d come into my office beside me and jump up on my leg. Not so much jumping the last year or so as he’d gotten older. Whenever he was ready to come back in, he’d come to the back door and paw it. I’d hear him scratching and let him in. So basically our understanding was that I was his slave :)
  • One thing I need to learn from Rio is to meet Duck at the back door, excited, whenever he comes home.
  • I’m most thankful that we were home when Rio passed, and that Duck was with him, petting him when it happened. Rio wasn’t in any pain and went quietly — all answered prayers.

While Rio was mostly Duck’s dog, he was a big part of my life too. The house seems empty without him, but I’m most thankful that he’s not hurting any more. Tomorrow is our 11th wedding anniversary. It’s weird not having Rio around — he, afterall, has been part of Duck’s life longer than I have so far. That’s a long time!

No Popularity Contests with God

My good friend, Heather @ Desperately Seeking Sanity, had her son come home crying yesterday (read the details of the story here). In the story, she shares with you (word-for-word) what I typed in an IM chat window for her to share with her son:

tell Matthew that when Jesus picked his disciples that he chose people that no one else would’ve — the unpopular, the ones who weren’t very educated, etc. He didn’t pick priests and people who were in the temples everyday — he picked fishermen

Seriously, had I known she was just going to read it off the screen as I typed it, I would’ve polished it up a bit more :)

The people back in that day did not want a Savior that came to them in a manager. They didn’t want a carpenter for a Savior. They didn’t want peace. They wanted a King that was going to rise up and kick bootie (but not theirs mind you — everyone else who was doing wrong). If it were up to the people, they would’ve picked someone who would’ve won wars, not healed the blind, sick and crippled. If it were up to the people, they would’ve had Jesus around forever with us on earth instead of having Him die on the cross. People rejected Jesus (then as they still do now).

When Jesus was picking disciples (or people to heal or people to talk to), he didn’t choose the most popular. The people would’ve chosen the high priest for sure — he’s smart, he knows what’s going on — but the priest wasn’t chosen. No one wanted to talk to the woman at the well — that’s why she went in the heat of the day, when no one else was there. Matthew was a tax collector — he definitely was not well-liked when Jesus chose him. It wasn’t a matter of them being uneducated (as in the book sense we think of today) but back then, Jesus picked those who weren’t the most educated on religious beliefs. Fishermen weren’t stupid. They were very good at what they did — what they knew about.

It wasn’t a popularity contest then — and it’s still not a popularity contest — at least not with God. It’s all about having a willing, open heart towards Him.

And with that, I’ll make this my Thankful Thursday post — because I am so very thankful that it’s not a popularity contest with God. There would be absolutely no hope for me if that were the case!

**Edited to add the link to the details of Heather’s story — because I know I had it there last night …

A Hot Thankful Thursday

I have a lot on my mind I’m thankful for, so let’s get to the list:

  • I am thankful for Jenny over at Life is Not a Cereal. She has a great Thankful Thursday post today and her other posts this week have really inspired me. She’s a great writer and wonderful designer too (I’m a little jealous though because I really would like to start digital scrapbooking!)
  • I am thankful for the ladies who are participating in my online study group. This is the first time I’ve been involved with something like this. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to get to know them all better.
  • I’m thankful for my health and my muscles — even when they hurt.
  • I’m thankful that someone nominated me for the Fruit of the Spirit graphic. That’s really an honor!
  • I’m thankful that my better half is a genius :)
  • I’m thankful that I am playing better softball and I get to play with my better half this fall season (we’ve not played together in at least 5 years!).

Head on over to Iris at Sting My Heart and check out the other Thankful Thursdays.

Ack! Thankful Thursday

I can’t believe I almost forgot that today is Thankful Thursday! Check in with Iris @ Sting My Heart, read her TT post, then sign Mr. Linky and get to it!!

  • I am thankful for Double Dog Dares. Since I took the challenge, I’ve been posting 2 or 3 or more posts a day. Of course I’ve also been dreaming about blogging and leaving comments. Yeah, I know. I need to get a life, but isn’t that what life is for? to blog about? :)
  • I’m thankful for my daughter, Doodle. Although we have our ups and downs (and she’s only 8!), I am blessed to have a healthy, strong-willed, sweet girl for my daughter.
  • I’m thankful that even though I made some poor choices earlier in my life, that my Mom still thinks I was perfect when she and Dad gave me to Duck. The embarrassment from posting about my crooked foot went away when I read that!
  • I’m thankful for my husband who has a wonderful sense of humor, a concern for my health and wellbeing, and a beautiful voice to boot (yes dear, I am linking to your blog so everyone can hear your voice. Maybe one day you’ll get into blogging too although I’m not so sure that’d be a good thing :D ).
  • I’m thankful for my long-time online buddies (Heather, Becki, and Dale). I’m also very thankful for all the new buddies I’m making this week. I’ve been reading more mom blogs and finding out maybe I’m not so different after all (stop laughing “Better Half”).
  • Oh yeah, I almost forgot a really important one. I’m thankful I went looking for my ball shirt early in the day. I have a game tonight at 8 pm. Guess where I found it? Yep, that’s right. In the washer from a few days ago.

So, get on with it now — what are you thankful for??

Thankful Thursday

There are so many things to be thankful for that I don’t even know where to start!

  • Back on July 7th, I shared the story of my salvation experience. I’m so very thankful that not only did I accept Jesus, I gave my life — me — to Him for Him to change. Amazingly, my husband accepted Jesus the same time. We were able to boldly build our marriage on God’s foundation. Almost 11 years later, there have been shaky moments, but the foundation has held our marriage together.
  • This summer, Howard’s started a new job that he absolutely loves. I know I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll mention it again, God’s really blessed us with his job. He loves most of the guys he’s working with — likes the rest :) and he’s so happy doing the things he’s given to do. He’s found a gym, and actually gets up before dawn (I think — I’m still asleep!), works out and gets into work early. I have been determined that we are going to tithe (we’d gotten away from it) every paycheck he gets. I’ve also been determined that we are going to save some money as well.
  • Our new-to-us car which I’ll write details about in another post
  • Callie started 3rd grade this week. She got a new teacher (the teacher just graduated in May so she’s “fresh”). Her teacher is really nice and very energetic which I think is a good thing! I’m thankful for the school she goes to and the parents that support the school.
  • I’m thankful I’ve been able to make a few changes in trying to improve our house and organize things. I still have a long, long way to go, but at least I’ve got a few things started and a clear direction in my head of where I want to go (which is a miracle in and of itself).
  • I’m thankful for the 4 ladies who are going to join me in an online Bible study. (Still open if anyone else is interested in joining!!)
  • I’m very thankful for Heather. Reading her Thankful Thursday post today actually made me cry — tears of joy. I am honored and humbled that God let me be a part of her life when she was asking many questions about Him. To see how far she’s come in such a short time, well, it’s just all God!
