First snag with the Mac

I am in awe. Truly I am. This MacBook Pro is amazing! It’s blazing fast. I can do at least 3-4 things instantly while my PC laptop is still thinking about what I typed 5 minutes ago. I did have a snag with one update. I got Bento (database program like FileMaker). I downloaded the upgrade it alerted me to and proceeded to install the application.

Installing Applications: I’ll say this is super easy. When you’ve inserted a CD, DVD or downloaded a disk image, a window pops up that shows the application you’re installing and the Applications folder. You are supposed to just drag the application icon to the application folder and *poof* magic stuff happens :) Unfortunately when I did this with the Bento upgrade, it told me I didn’t have enough privileges (why do I always want to put a d in privileges?). Hello? This is a brand new, out-of-the-box MacBook Pro. I’m the only one who is an admin? Why would I not have sufficient privileges?

Off to Google the error: I google ‘do not have sufficient privileges mac’ and come to this thread with the answer. I’ll copy the answer here for those of you who may come across this same problem:

hmm, that’s strange. just to make sure, check that your account still says admin in system preferences->accounts. If it does, run the following terminal commands. they will reset permissions on your Applications folder and everything in it. Please copy and paste (do not retype). enter the commands one at a time.

sudo chown -R root:admin /Applications

sudo chmod -R g=rw,o=r,+X /Applications

sudo chmod -RN /Applications

sudo chmod +a “everyone deny delete” /Applications /Applications/Utilities

You’ll have to enter your admin password (which you won’t see) after the first command. that’s normal. see if you can update apps now.

Terminal? Commands?: Now, I’ve immersed myself in Linux before and I’m not afraid of entering commands in a terminal. I’d venture to say though that most of you would be terrified if you came across that as a fix. The typical user would be blown away, I’m sure. Even though the guy posting this did say to copy and paste his commands, you have to be sure you are getting this from a valid source. There are mean people out there that would tell you wrong. But this is from the Apple Support board so I figured he would have been called out by now.

Finding the Terminal: Ok, so now to find the terminal. I looked at my Dock and found Documents. I clicked on that and saw where the Applications folder is stored. I clicked on Applications and not seeing Terminal there, I clicked on Utilities to open that folder. Bingo! I found Terminal. Now after I’ve used it, it is showing in my Dock which is good. I think I’ll be using it again.

Hardest thing to get used to: The hardest thing to get used to so far is the Command key is like the Control (CTRL) key on the PC. Well, this MacBook has a Control key in the same place as my PC, but it doesn’t do anything. So maybe I need to find that preference or something. I have to remember to reach over further with my pinky to hit the Command key when doing some shortcuts.

Coolest thing so far: Besides the speed is the size of the screen. It’s huge! I went with a 17″ and I’m thankful I did. That is until the screen went black while I was eating lunch over my PC — think I’m crazy? I didn’t want to get anything on my Mac! Anyway, when the screen went black, it was almost like looking in the mirror. Yep, definitely shower time! Catch you later ;)
