On the Road to Biker Mama Status

by Lisa B on March 8, 2008

Yes, I’m here. Yes, I had motorcycle class last night and all day today. No, I haven’t fallen off the bike. No, I haven’t hurt myself or anyone else in the class :)

So, I’m well on my way to be a Biker Mama. The class has been interesting. Last night was all classroom time where we went over stuff like where the controls on the bike are and things to do to reduce risks when you are riding. We went around the room for introductions and to tell the instructors what we expected and what we were concerned about. Most all of us said we expected to learn to be safe riding and we were concerned about riding safely.

This morning it was raining off and on, but thankfully the instructors let us to the classroom work first and then go outside later after it had cleared up. The wind was blowing fiercely though — and even knocked over a few parked bikes, the one I was riding just had to be one :)

All in all it was a great day. I’m exhausted though. It’s tough learning to ride a motorcycle, but also tough when you are battling the winds that would come in on us. There were some things that I learned to do quickly — like turning — which was really cool when I finally “got it.” Then there are a few things I still need to work on — like weaving. I did ok when the cones were lined up in a straight line — but then they staggered them. That was tough. The instructors kept telling me to keep my head up and look in the direction I wanted to go, but for the life of me, I kept looking down trying to make sure I went in between the cones. I mean really — they put them down and tell you to weave in and out and don’t expect you to look down at them? Crazy. Like I said, I still need to work on that — oh, and they said we get to do weaving again tomorrow. Yee-haw.

If I make it through tomorrow, Duck might let me ride on the road :) So be on the lookout. And if you happen to see me, please be nice and leave extra distance between you and me! If you don’t live near me, be on the lookout for motorcycles. Count them. See how many you notice when you are trying. Most accidents happen when vehicles encroach the motorcyclist’s right-of-way, so just be on the look out for them. It’s not that we have a death wish — it’s just a really cool way to ride. I’ll leave you with a quote one of my instructors put on the board this morning:

Only motorcycle riders understand why a dog sticks his head out of the window while your driving.
