Where are all the women geeks?

That is a question I’ve been pondering this afternoon. I admit I’m a special breed. I love technology, computers, internet, all things geeky and cool. Yes, I am also a woman. Several years ago I was determined to learn about Linux. I started participating in a local linux users group and found it quite cool I was one of about 3 women there (with an average of about 40 men to a monthly meeting — more online).

A similar distressing area where there is lack of women is in churchs’ sound area/IT departments, etc. I was totally welcome onto the sound team of both churches I’ve been a member of the past 11 years. I see all kinds of blogs for christian IT topics but all are written by men (if you know of a woman writing one, please let me know!). While I am quite versed in geek and christianese, it’s got to be down right difficult for many other women to learn in this atmosphere.

Yes, this little rant also has something to do with serving at my church. I know that we should use our unique gifts and talents serving in a local church. However, the church I am currently a member at doesn’t have much of a web page at all and I don’t really think anyone’s up for changing that. The pastor doesn’t have email, doesn’t use the Internet for anything, and only uses his computer once in a blue moon to type sermon notes in Word.

So I’ll continue to attend my local church in an effort to get “filled up” there and “unload” here. Aren’t ya’ll the lucky ones! :-D
