Works For Me Wednesday: Parenting Advice

Shannon over at Rocks In My Dryer has posted a piece of her parenting advice here. Check out the other advice moms are sharing on their blogs and join in the fun!

I was talking to a really good friend of mine (Julie H.) one day about getting frustrated with Doodle (my darling daughter who never does anything wrong … wuhahahaha …). She suggested that when I get frustrated, mad and upset, to recite a verse of scripture.

Her idea worked for me. The next time I saw her I told her I started reciting “Thou shalt not kill.” [Exodus 20:13] She said she had thought more along the lines of “Children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” [Psalm 127:3]. I told her I liked mine better because it was shorter and helped me remember not to strangle Doodle. So that’s my piece of advice.

When I was looking up the blessing scripture (because of course I can’t remember it!), I came across a little article Children Are a Blessing Not an Inconvenience. Very interesting, quick read.

A friend told me about a book of speaking praise over your children. I tried it some, and it was kind of effective. Your kids have a hard time fighting with each other when you say “My children love and obey the Lord” and stuff like that, lol. I kept repeating it over and over until they stopped the behavior they were doing.

That’s awesome advice! And can I just be among the many who say “WOW! You have 7 kids? Amazing!” :) I’m sure you have lots of parenting advice to share. I’ll be looking for more for raising a girl … she’s every bit like me, and that scares me! Although she does get this funny look on her face if I start repeating “thou shalt not kill.” :D It does make them stop and think. Perhaps a more positive angle would work better :)
