Picky Eaters

We’ve often struggled with my daughter eating anything but chicken and fries. Somehow, she’s managed to eat a few different things, but not really healthy stuff. I remember back to when I was in the 10th grade. Back then that was the first grade of high school (since then they’ve moved 9th grade to the high schools). Not only did we have a regular cafeteria with the healthy food, but we had a “snack shack” — I forget what they called it. The snack shack served hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries (among other snackish foods) every day regardless of what was on the healthy school cafeteria menu. I would get 2 orders of fries every day and drown them in ketchup. You heard right, I ate 2 orders (a big ol’ plate full) of fries every day — and I’m still here :)

So while I’ve figured out my daughter gets her picky eating habits honestly, I’m wondering how really concerned we should be with eating healthy. My body’s changed a lot since I was in high school and I eat different foods now, but I don’t know really if I should be *that* concerned with my daughter’s diet?

I am starting a quest to eat at home more (I’m the drive-thru queen whose daughter considers Bojangles “Mom’s Home Cooking”). We’re always running and doing something though, so I really need some basic nutrition and advice — you know, simple stuff to fix that’s not terribly harmful for my family.

School Menu and Family Everday are 2 sites that work together with School Food Services Directors providing information about nutrition and fitness (also something else I need to be doing more of — exercise!). On School Menu, they have cool games for your kids as well as an art gallery. My daughter LOVES to play games on the computer, so I’m hoping she can learn some good things from the games here. Lissa Coffey (nice name :D ) is the host at Family Everyday. I’m hoping to get some ideas from there on what to cook for dinner and ways to fit exercise into my day. Check out these sites too and let me know what you think about them. Perhaps you have other sites you’d recommend too. Leave me a comment and share. I need all the help I can get :)

    Hi!

I recently purchased a fun product from a company called Simple Memory Art (www.SimpleMemoryArt.com ) called a 50 Healthy Foods magnet set. It’s a really cool item actually — it’s a magnet set that lists the major food groups, has them color coded in rainbow-like colors, and tells you everything about the food — vitamins, calories, grams of fat, protein, etc. It’s REALLY helpful and it makes my fridge look
    happier too!

The magnets are perfect for anyone who already maintains a healthy lifestyle and sees it as a great novelty magnet set to add to their fridge, or for those looking to eat a little healthier. It’s ideal for families too, especially to encourage children to adopt healthier eating habits. Here’s a direct link to an image of the product: http://www.simplememoryart.com/shop_MG102.html

    Have a great day!

    All the best,
    Marissa

I think taste buds are growing along with other parts of the kid. Also, remember how small their stomachs are. I never thought about that until a dr. told my daughter that my grandson’s stomach wasn’t even as big as a fist. Offer good snacks, make sure the chicken isn’t moldy and enjoy her smile!
